Nintendo Direct: A 2013 Retrospective

Nintendo Direct @ E3 2013 – June 11

  • Nintendo shifted away from a traditional press conference into a more casual presentation at E3 this past year. This time around, we got a lot of details, but Nintendo only announced a couple of new titles in their less-than-60-minute video.
    .
  • Pokémon X and Y got some new details in the form of the announcement of the new fairy type that had been rumoured for months at that point. Read our review here.
    .
  • mariokart801Super Mario 3D World was announced as the next “true 3D” Mario title, and the first of its kind on Wii U, hot off the heels of the successful Super Mario 3D Land on the 3DS from a year and a half earlier. Read our review here.
    .
  • Mario Kart 8 was also announced and features gravity-defying upside-down and sideways racing alongside our favourite Mario racers. This one will be out in Spring 2014. Read our impressions from E3 here.
    .
  • We also got a few more details about the Miiverse functionality that would be replacing the Tingle Tuner in The Wind Waker HD.
    .
  • The next instalment of the Donkey Kong Country series was also announced as under development by Retro Studios, to the chagrin of many gamers who hoped they were working on the next Metroid title. Read our impressions from E3 here.
    .
  • Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and for 3DS were finally officially showed off, with the first batch of screenshots, live gameplay, and new characters on the roster announced. Mega Man is joining the cast, alongside the Wii Fit Trainer.
    .
  • The_Legend_of_Zelda_A_Link_Between_Worlds_NA_coverThe Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds was announced to be the official title of the next handheld game, previously announced in April’s Nintendo Direct presentation. Read our impressions from E3 here.
    .
  • Nintendo also tried to reaffirm that third party developers have come back to the table with a renewed sense of commitment for the console, and that they will be bringing a wider variety of titles to the Wii U and 3DS in the coming months. We can’t say we’ve really seen a whole lot of that so far, to be honest.

Developer Direct @ E3 2013 – June 11

Nintendo Direct – August 7

  • Nothing new was announced during this Nintendo Direct. Instead, Nintendo opted to discuss upcoming games, and announce some details about titles coming later in the year and beyond.
    .
  • Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and for 3DS got Luigi added as an official character (as if there was any doubt), the 3DS Virtual Console got a bunch of new retro titles, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf got a new plaza. Beyond that, this was a pretty uneventful Direct, as expected come hot off the heels of E3 less than two months earlier.
