Nintendo Direct: A 2013 Retrospective

Nintendo Direct – November 13

  • Nintendo made sure to make fans aware that they’d be discussing previously-announced titles in this Nintendo Direct presentation.
    .
  • Super Mario 3D World - Splash ArtA bundle featuring a gold 3DS XL console was announced for A Link Between Worlds, after many rumours to that end.
    .
  • Mario Party: Island Tour was given its full name about a week before its launch.
    .
  • Nintendo announced that the latest 3DS system update would merge the accounts of a user’s Wii U and 3DS eShop balance into one cohesive amount, and get rid of friend codes in favour of usernames. Finally.
    .
  • We also got an interesting top 10 coolest things to do in Super Mario 3D World, which was rounded out with the introduction of Rosalina into the latest game!

Nintendo Direct – December 18

  • Most recently, Nintendo decided to open up a brand new world with Hyrule Warriors (tentative title), a spin on the Zelda and Dynasty Warriors games developed by Tecmo Koei.
    .
  • Nintendo gave a new title to its recently announced 3DS game, Kirby: Triple Deluxe. The game lets Kirby pop between the background and foreground, LittleBigPlanet-style, to make great use of the 3D effect of the game.
    .
  • Donkey_kong_tropical_freeze_boxartYoshi’s New Island for 3DS is coming in 2014.
    .
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze gets Cranky Kong as a playable character, as previously announced.
    .
  • Sonic: Lost World got its first free DLC in the form of a Yoshi-inspired level, along with an upcoming Zelda-inspired one.
    .
  • NES Remix is a title that is actually 16 micro games based on the original NES titles we know and love, but with wacky and wild objectives.
    .
  • Dr. Luigi is a real thing.
    .
  • We got a new trailer for Mario Kart 8 and the announcement that Rosalina would be a playable character in Super Smash Bros., if that game ever actually comes out.

And there you have it! A year’s worth of Nintendo Direct presentations (the big ones, anyway) and all the goodies contained within them. It has been a pretty massive year for the company, even with their new home console failing to pick up as much attention as the Xbox One or PlayStation 4. Regardless, with new Zelda, Mario Kart, and Super Smash Bros. titles on the horizon for 2014, it could shape up to be their biggest year yet.
