Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition coming soon

Guacamelee! - Promo ArtIndie darling, Guacamelee! will soon be reaching more platforms than ever! Toronto-based Drinkbox Studios has just confirmed that they are developing an enhanced port of the highly acclaimed action-adventure game, dubbed, ‘Guacamelee!: Super Turbo Championship Edition‘. Yes, it’s a humourous jab at Street Fighter II’s many re-releases, which is unsurprising, given that Guacamelee! itself is full of all sorts of gaming in-jokes.

Guacamelee!: Super Turbo Championship Edition packs in all of the DLC from the original release, as well as a further helping of new areas, bosses and other such challenges. The announcement comes with a brief, but compelling new trailer that teases some of this all-new content.

We reviewed Guacamelee!’s original release last year, which we gave stellar praise to, declaring it one of the best games available in the entire PlayStation Store catalogue. The game is a parody of both Mexican and gaming culture, with players taking control of reincarnated luchador, Juan Aguacate, on a quest to rescue his beloved from undead villain, Carlos Calaca. It unfolds in an open-world, Metroid-esque style, while also including fast-paced combat, and the ability to alter the level design by phasing between the Living World and Dead World at the touch of a button.

The co-op component from the PlayStation 3 edition will be offered in this re-release as well.

Guacamelee! was originally funded by the PlayStation Pub Fund program, which made it a cross-buy game for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. The game then received a port for PC via Steam a few months later, and just recently came to both Mac and Linux.

Guacamelee!: Super Turbo Championship Edition will release not only for PlayStation 4, but also for Xbox 360, Xbox One and Wii U. It doesn’t appear to be planned for the game’s former platforms at all, unfortunately.

Nonetheless, if you missed out on this indie gem before on account of not being a PlayStation gamer or PC gamer, you officially have no excuse to pass it up, now that the game is expanding to Xbox and Nintendo platforms!
