Community returns for Season Six on March 17th

There’s been a lot of hot TV news out of the TCA, from tidbits on shows yet to come, and plenty of announcements and renewals related to shows that people already love. Among the shows that many people love, few are loved by as passionate an audience as Community, a show that was saved from the brink of death by Yahoo right before the lead cast’s contracts were set to expire, following a cancellation by NBC after Season Five.

Now, we know when class will be back in session at Greendale Community College. Community’s sixth season will debut on Tuesday, March 17th, exclusively on Yahoo Screen. The season will be free to view, with commercial breaks, meaning that no paid Yahoo subscription of any sort will be required for Community fans to pick up from where Season Five left off. Unlike competing streaming service Netflix however (which hosts the first four seasons of Community at present, if you want to start catching up), which delivers lump seasons of its dedicated shows all at once, Yahoo won’t place all of Season Six’s planned thirteen episodes on Yahoo Screen in one lump sum. Instead, the show will have a two-episode premiere, with the rest of the episodes going up for the next eleven Tuesday’s.

Most of the show’s current lead cast is set to return for Season Six, namely Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Gillian Jacobs, Alison Brie, Ken Jeong, and Jim Rash. Yvette Nicole Brown was forced to bow out of the series on account of needing to care for her ailing father, though it is possible that she may be able to pop up in a guest role at some point. Another former lead who left the show, Donald Glover, may also return for guest appearances in Season Six. Joel McHale even teased that we may see a re-appearance by yet another departed former lead, Chevy Chase for the new season, even though his character is supposed to be dead. Obviously, as McHale states, Chase re-appearing in some form would have to be one pretty tightly-kept secret by showrunner, Dan Harmon though.
