Korok seeds are poop: confirmed by Zelda director

[Mild spoilers for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild ahead.]

One of the most daunting collectibles challenge in any game in the last decade has been finding all 900 Korok seeds in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Of course, the sheer volume of seeds never stopped many players from finding them all, with the first reports of a complete collection coming in within weeks of the game’s release.

The prize for finding every single Korok seed? Well, speak to the large Korok named Hestu, and he’ll give you … a very large poop. The game doesn’t call it that–it’s actually called Hestu’s Gift–but it’s a giant turd. The description for the item even says,

A gift of friendship given to you by Hestu.
It smells pretty bad.

Speaking with IGN following The Game Awards in December, game director Hidemaro Fujibayashi did confirm that the item was in fact a gag, laughing that, “We just kind of thought it would be funny to make that a big joke. It’s just the backstory, the kind of hidden kind of thing in the game the whole way is that the Korok seeds are actually Korok poop.”

There were fan theories that Korok seeds were in fact Korok poop to begin with, and it turns out that they were right!
