Microsoft reveals Blair Witch video game; will release later this summer

Without any warning, Microsoft began playing the world premiere of an interesting, but spooky trailer. A cinematic affair that showed a man walking into darkened woods with only a flashlight and a camcorder in hand.

After discovering, then walking inside of a dilapidated cabin, things went back in time to show the man pulling off the road and entering those very woods with his dog in tow. As he did so, a radio report played, and issued an alert about a missing 9 year-old boy.

Seeing the first-person viewpoint, the camcorder, the main character looking through its viewpoint and the spooky overtones made us think we were watching the debut trailer for Outlast 3. After all, those games are based around the very same things. That didn’t end up being the case, though, as after showing us all it had to share, the trailer’s camera zoomed out to reveal The Blair Witch logo within its tree-filled canopy. After that, the game’s name — Blair Witch — showed.

Blair Witch will bring its scares to Xbox One, Xbox Game Pass and Windows PC on August 30th.

UPDATE: We now know who’s behind Blair Witch, and it’s none other than the folks at Bloober Team. They’re the ones who created, developed and released both Layers of Fear games, as well as >observer_.

Here’s the story synopsis, which we’ve borrowed from a press release:

It’s 1996. A young boy disappears in the Black Hills Forest near Burkittsville, Maryland. As Ellis, a former police officer with a troubled past, you join the search. What starts as an ordinary investigation soon turns into an endless nightmare as you confront your fears and the Blair Witch, a mysterious force that haunts the woods.
