We love beautiful typography. We also happen to love great music. It was a really beautiful discovery that Sony celebrated its 125 year anniversary with a stunning typographic display at its Derry Street offices in London.
Nearly 150 square meters (1600 square feet!) were covered in a stunning mural of sorts, each panel dedicated to a decade in Sony’s musical history. The panels begin in the late 1880s and stretch right through to present day.
Using laser-cut vinyl in black with a few red accents, designer Alex Fowkes, using printing company Lex Media & Display, spent hours and hours compiling artists, getting the typography right, and then not screwing it up when applying it to the office walls.
The final product is something truly spectacular and it would take hours, if not days, to properly read through all the artists, cycling through your memory of each one and playing a song or two in your head. With well nearly 1000 artists emblazoned on the wall, it’s no wonder that Sony has had such a storied history in the music industry.
Luckily, we can take a look at a video of how everything was put together. Imagine the amount of hours this must have taken and the care and passion someone must have to do this and you just might get an idea for the scope of the project.
For the record, stuff like this is why we do what we do. We love seeing beautiful pieces of art and writing about them. It’s what concerts are, and what video games, movies, and albums are. Art.
