Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV marks return of iconic RTS

One of pop culture’s more iconic real-time strategy series will return, with today’s announcement of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV at gamescom.

Developed by KING Art Games and published by Deep Silver, this new instalment promises deep solo campaigns, classic Warhammer storytelling and even a painter tool which will allow folks to customize their units on the field.

The reveal trailer features gameplay, and narration through Cyrus’ eyes.

“Cyrus narrates his own life of duty, war, and sacrifice, revealing the four main playable factions: Space Marines (Blood Ravens), Orks, Adeptus Mechanicus, and the Necrons, and returning characters such as Jonah and Gorgutz. It shows the grim, dark, and brutal nature of war at an epic scale, both ranged and melee.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV marks a triumphant return to the franchise’s roots, with classic base-building, large armies, and deep strategic gameplay all brought to life through modern innovations and a fresh narrative set on the iconic planet Kronus, approximately 200 years after the events of Dawn of War: Dark Crusade.

Key features include:

  • Four fully playable and distinct factions: Space Marines, Orks, Necrons, and the Adeptus Mechanicus. Each of the four factions in Dawn of War IV have a separate campaign which tells a different side of the overall story, featuring a total of 70+ missions.
  • Extensive solo campaigns and other game modes: Skirmish, co-op, and competitive multiplayer, along with the return of the fan-favorite Last Stand. In each of the game’s modes, players build bases, assume control of faction Commanders, gather resources, and command units to ultimately overwhelm the enemy’s forces.
  • Legendary Warhammer storytelling at its finest: Co-written by legendary Black Library author John French, each faction has its own cinematic CGI intro, which leads into a non-linear campaign, providing a wealth of replayability for players who want to explore every inch of this epic saga.
  • Biggest Dawn of War at launch: Four distinct factions, 10+ playable Commanders, 110+ units / buildings, many of which are customizable, an in-game editor for player-created content, and a Painter tool for unit customization.
  • Modern innovation mixed with classic RTS mechanics: With the revolutionary Combat Director, gameplay will have a next-level display of visceral melee combat.”
