Karaoke-themed music game, SingStar first debuted on the PlayStation 2 in 2004, making this year the game’s tenth anniversary. To celebrate the occasion, Sony has announced via the PlayStation Blog that an all-new SingStar release will coming to PlayStation 4 later this year, believed to be once again developed by Sony’s London Studio.
SingStar has featured numerous songs and track packs across both a PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 build. While the series is considerably more popular in Europe than it is North America, with Canada and the U.S. receiving only a fraction of the total available SingStar releases, SingStar still maintains a cult following of pop enthusiasts across the world. In its native Europe, the series has seen a colossal 70 total (!) releases of various song varieties, with 26 million combined copies sold worldwide.
Along with the news that the series is getting an upgrade to PlayStation 4, Sony also announced a new SingStar App for smartphones and tablets, which will launch with the new game. It will allow players to use their mobile device as a microphone, eliminating the need for a separate dedicated mic peripheral. While the app is mainly meant for the PlayStation 4 release, Sony has confirmed that it will be compatible with the previous PlayStation 3 release as well.
The handful of details revealed about the new PlayStation 4 release include quick, easy sharing of your singing moments on Facebook and Twitter, as well as a refined scoring system that lets you build up XP that you can spend on rewards, challenge PlayStation Network friends to singing competitions, and provide general entertainment for your friends list with your singing antics.
More details about SingStar for PlayStation 4 will be gradually unveiled during the months ahead, and the new game may even make an appearance at this year’s E3, though that’s unconfirmed at this time. While we know the new follow-up will be released before the end of 2014, it’s also currently without any kind of specific release date.
Eggplante will continue to harmonize your SingStar news and updates.
