Call of Duty: Modern Warfare achieves blockbuster opening

By all accounts, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has had a very successful launch. So much so that its publisher, that being the giant that is Activision, has released a press release celebrating a ‘blockbuster opening.’

Their words seem very fair, given that the reboot of the series’ magnum opus has brought in over $600 million in just three days. That’s a lot of money. Furthermore, Modern Warfare (2019) has also become:

  • The top selling premium video game release of 2019
  • The biggest selling digital opening in Activision history
  • A PS4 record setter, with the highest amount of digital sales in a game’s first 3 days
  • The highest selling Call of Duty game of this generation, based on opening sales data
  • The biggest Call of Duty PC launch ever

Needless to say, it seems like rebooting Modern Warfare was a great decision.

“Call of Duty is once again the top selling new premium game of the year, proving the enduring nature of the franchise across console, PC, mobile, and esports,” said Bobby Kotick, Activision Blizzard’s Chief Executive Officer. “In its first three days of release, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare more than doubled the box office opening of Joker.”

“Through the first three days, Modern Warfare has more total players and total hours played than any Call of Duty opening release in the last six years. More importantly, our players are having a great time playing,” said Rob Kostich, president, Activision. “Congratulations to Infinity Ward and all our teams involved on an incredible game and its spectacular launch. We also want to thank the community for your incredible support. The launch of Modern Warfare is only the start. There’s much more to come.”
