Microsoft cancels Perfect Dark, closes studio and shutters other project(s)

Over the last day or two, there was talk that Microsoft would be laying off some of its workforce in the gaming sector. That unfortunately occurred today, when the company behind the Xbox brand closed one studio and cancelled at least three projects. In total, it’s said that 9,000 jobs were affected.

The biggest news of the day, in regards to this, is that the Perfect Dark reboot has been cancelled, and its developer has also been shut down. This marks the end for The Initiative and those who worked there. We hadn’t seen, or heard much about it in some time.

Also cancelled is Everwild — Rare’s new, massively multiplayer, IP. That, along with a new ZeniMax game code named Blackbird.

It’s a sad day for the industry, and we at Eggplante would like to wish the best to those involved.
