I’m a sucker for a good mystery or thriller, and am always looking for something interesting to read. While perusing upcoming books, one such sounding novel caught my eye, and that was I Will Find You by Jessica Huntley. I read part of it last summer, got sidetracked, and now recently returned to finish it, in order to allow for myself to post the review that I’ve owed.
I Will Find You begins as a couple starts an arduous and lengthy trek across an expanse of mountains. The husband is an experienced climber and mountaineer, with such trips on his resume, but the wife has somewhat recently gotten into a more athletic lifestyle. Still, the two have decided to go on a long excursion of this magnitude, and one will rely on the other’s expertise to keep her safe.
As they are about to start out, Bonnie (the wife) finds a newspaper clipping about a rumoured witch of the mountain. However, she thinks of it as likely being a myth, and trusts her husband, Stefan. However, after he begins lying to her, and takes them off course, they become stuck in the mountains during a bad snowstorm. It’s at that point where they find a cabin, and the old lady who lives inside of it. She reluctantly lets them in, but something seems off. Is she the witch? Also, how much has Stefan been lying about? Furthermore, is this presumed shelter from the storm as safe as it seems?
The vantage point shifts from Bonnie’s to that of another lady, who is eventually revealed. It delves into their pasts, and helps explain everything that has gone into their current predicament, and the issues and worries they bring into it. It kept me quite interested.
This is a page turner of a thriller, and a pretty good one at that. I found that it moved pretty quickly, kept my interest and threw some decent twists at me as a reader. Some things were pretty easy to suss out, but not everything, and some of it was kind of wild.
The writing is solid, the story is told well, and it’s an easy book to get lost into. However, some parts drag, some are over explained and a bit of it was a little too predictable.
At the end of the day, I Will Find You is a good book that is worth reading if the premise and subject matter intrigues you. It may be a bit much for some, but it’s a good read. After all, it is a psychological thriller, and one that doesn’t always hold back.
This review is based on an advanced reader copy of the book which we were provided by its publisher.
