In a surprise Nintendo Direct this morning, the Kyoto-based company has announced Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, due out later this year.

Like its full-sized companion on Wii U, the game will allow players to create their own Mario levels in a variety of different Mario universes.

The game won’t feature online play or the ability to play Wii U courses on the handheld version, but will support StreetPass, as well as the ability to share stages via local Wi-Fi.

An interesting addition is the ability to share incomplete stages in order to collaborate with your friends on new Mario levels.

Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS launches exclusively for Nintendo’s handheld on December 2, 2016.
