PlayStation State of Play Recap [6.4.25]

The summer gaming season is upon us and, now that E3 is no more, companies are holding their own press conferences and live-streaming them. PlayStation was up first this year, and got the ball rolling.

Today, Sony held another one of its PlayStation State of Play showcases, during which it announced a number of titles and shared new information/footage from others. In case you missed it, here’s a recap of what was revealed:

Lumines Arise:

Lumines Arise is a new installment of the long-running and once quite popular puzzle series, which is being developed by Enhance and Monstars. It uses beautiful, psychedelic, backgrounds as well as flashes of light, to border its visceral puzzles.

Here’s its blurb, which was taken from Steam:

“A mind-blowing, fiendishly addictive reinvention of the puzzle classic Lumines from the creators of Tetris Effect: Connected, where sound pulses through your body, mind, and every block you place, triggering dazzling visuals synched to the driving beat of an infectious, eclectic soundtrack.

Journey through over 30 stages of synesthetic sensory wonderlands, everything from lush jungles to buzzing Tokyo streets to more surreal experiences, matching blocks and crafting insane combos with the all-new Burst mechanic. Mix it up with a variety of other single-player modes and challenges, or test your mettle against friends or strangers in online multiplayer.

Whether you’re looking to get hyped up or chill out, new to the series or a veteran, have an hour to kill or just five minutes, want to play solo, with friends, or challenge strangers, or play in optional VR or stunning 4K, Lumines Arise is the ultimate puzzle game.”

Pragmata:

“What comes after dreaming?” That is the question that is posited at the beginning of the new trailer for Pragmata; the science fiction game from Capcom that was originally revealed several years ago.

The game made a return to today’s PlayStation State of Play, through this new trailer, and received a 2026 launch window. As such, we know it’s still ‘alive,’ still coming out and can continue to look forward to it.

Romeo is a Dead Man:

Romeo is a Dead Man is a new project from Grasshopper Manufacture, which is ultra violent. They refer to it as “ultra-violent science fiction,” and that’s what the trailer showcases. This over-the-top game is expected to release in 2026.

The trailer begins with some really odd looking cartoon cinematics, and then proceeds into a title screen before showing some very, very gory gameplay. It’s weird to say the least.

“Super bloody action, crazy twists and turns to blow players’ minds, and a whole mess of kinda-stereotypical gimmicks – all rolled into one wild ride. Our hero Romeo Stargazer is a man stuck between life and death. His own was saved mere seconds before the end by way of a time paradox that shattered the space-time continuum, which was created by a genius scientist screwing around. Now, Romeo is FBI Space-Time special agent “Dead Man”, and sporting a rad mask called Dead Gear, must hunt space-time’s most wanted fugitives through multiple universes!

Romeo swaps between guns and swords, using his enemies’ own power against them to absolutely annihilate the evil hordes in this peak example of full-on bloody action, featuring ridiculously clever level design in which you’ll be jumping back and forth between the real world subspace, and white-hot battles cathartic enough to collapse the universe itself! When the going really gets tough, unleash Bloody Summer – an instant-kill special attack that uses blood accumulated from your enemies – to turn things around and get back on top!

Romeo’s search for these space-time fugitives ends up intertwining with his search for his suddenly missing girlfriend, the mysterious Juliet… You’ll just have to play the game to see how (and even if) these mysteries unravel, but after all is said and done (and dead), will Romeo be able to see the tears of time?! Stay tuned!”

This is not a PlayStation exclusive, as it’s also been announced for Xbox Series and PC.

Silent Hill f:

The much talked-about next Silent Hill game, that being Silent Hill f, made an appearance during today’s showcase and caused a stir.

Based in Japan, Silent Hill f tasks players with taking control of a young woman named Hinako. She must attempt to survive against humanoid monsters and other creatures, all while attempting to figure out what is going on.

“Set during the 1960s in the fictional town of Ebisugaoka, Japan, it follows Hinako Shimizu, a high school student who navigates the town, now consumed by fog, while solving puzzles and fighting grotesque monsters to survive.”

Silent Hill f will be released on September 25th.

Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement:

A new entry in the Bloodstained series, Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement made its debut at today’s event. Through a reveal gameplay trailer, we can tell that it’s a Metroidvania style game with multiple characters, costumes and the like. It’ll be released in 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series and PC.

“Set in a haunting world years before the events of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement follows Leo and the fearless Black Wolves as they prepare to storm the cursed Ethereal Castle and confront the rising darkness. Under the command of Lord Theodore, the warriors face horrific beasts and the malevolent Demon Lord Elias in a brutal battle for humanity’s survival.

With innovative combat mechanics, cinematic storytelling, and relentless boss encounters, Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement promises an intense, atmospheric journey into the heart of evil.”

Digimon Story: Time Stranger:

Digimon Story: Time Stranger, the occasionally strange and surreal looking RPG set in the popular Digimon universe, received a new trailer. It features a release date, that being October 3rd.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles:

Once very popular, Final Fantasy Tactics is returning, and will be playable on PlayStation 5. This marks the return of a game that originally released in 1997, for the original PlayStation, before being ported to the PSP.

This remastered version is called Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, and it’ll be released on September 30th.

Baby Steps:

Described as being “a literal walking simulator,” Baby Steps is a unique and quirky game coming from Devolver Digital and Getting Over It developer Benny Foddy. It’s going to launch on September 8th, and you can play its demo during Steam Next Fest.

The game received a new trailer today, though it was previously announced a couple of years ago.

Hirogami:

A 3D action-platformer inspired by the Japanese art of folding paper (called Origami), Hirogami is a unique-looking adventure that was shown off after Baby Steps‘ new trailer finished. You can see its new trailer above, and will understand why it’s one worth keeping an eye on after doing so.

Hirogami is releasing on September 3rd, but can be pre-ordered now. It looks to be $39.99 Canadian, or $35.99 if you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber. This is not a PlayStation exclusive, though. It’s also coming to PC, or so it seems.

Everybody’s Golf Hot Shots:

Hot Shots Golf will return in the form of Everybody’s Golf Hot Shots, which received a new trailer. It showed off some colourful, arcadey, gameplay, and also introduced Pac-Man as a playable character.

This game is also coming to Switch 2 and PC via Steam. It’ll be released on the 5th of September.

Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound:

The next entry in the long-running Ninja Gaiden series, that being Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound (and not Ninja Gaiden 4), received a new trailer as well. The new look showed off multiple areas, different attacks, and various enemies.

It’ll be released on July 31st for multiple platforms. That date was revealed today, through this trailer.

Cairn:

We received another glimpse at footage from Cairn; the mountain-climbing adventure game from developer The Game Bakers. It’s launching on November 5th, but has a demo out now.

Cairn is also coming to Steam.

Mortal Kombat Legacy Collection:

The classic Mortal Kombat games will return again, and will be playable on modern hardware thanks to the newly announced Mortal Kombat Legacy Collection. This partnership between NetherRealm Studios and Digital Eclipse will bring Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat 3, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Mortal Kombat 4 and more to PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch consoles, as well as PC. It’s expected later this year.

Project Defiant:

Code named Project Defiant, the first ever fight stick from Sony itself is currently in development.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater:

The remake of one of the best stealth action games ever made, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater followed Project Defiant, and did so with a new trailer. It showed new gameplay, more of the Snake vs. Monkey mini-game, and also teased the return of Metal Gear Online.

This one is set to release on August 28th.

Nioh 3:

Fans of Soulslike games will be happy to hear that Nioh 3 was a surprise announcement during today’s PlayStation State of Play showcase. Not only was it revealed, but it was also given a 2026 release window.

A surprise demo was also released, but it’ll only be available for a limited time.

Thief VR: Legacy of Shadows:

Another real surprise came from the announcement of Thief VR: Legacy of Shadows. Many had though that this very long-in-the-tooth and undoubtedly classic series was dead, after the debacle that was its reboot for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. However, the series will return in virtual reality form, through Thief VR: Legacy of Shadows for PlayStation VR 2.

The trailer shows a very agile, female, protagonist. She’s seen stealthily pickTpocketing enemies, taking them out with her crossbow and more.

It’s scheduled to release later this year.

Tides of Tomorrow:

We received another look at Tides of Tomorrow, which is coming to us from the folks behind Road 96. It’s an asynchronous multiplayer game, in which each player’s experience will impact those of others.

It’s set to release in 2026.

Astro Bot:

The incredibly popular 3D platformer starring the titular Astro Bot is set to receive five new Vicious Void challenge levels in July.

Sea of Remnants:

This is a new, swashbuckling, pirate adventure. It’s being developed by Joker Studio, in partnership with NetEase, and is described as being “an infinite voyage looping between death and rebirth—a journey where we row forward, tirelessly, only to return to where it all began.” It looks to have RPG elements, and is expected in 2026.

Sword of the Sea:

Sword of the Sea is the next project from the developer of Abzu and The Pathless, which combines skateboarding style movement with a story about a dying world. It’s expected to be released on August 19th.

007: First Light:

After being teased earlier in the week, the next James Bond game (007: First Light) was finally revealed by IO Interactive, the folks behind Hitman. Featuring a much younger version of the world’s most popular fictional double agent, it debuted with a visceral trailer that you’ll want to see.

This one is expected in 2026, and more footage will be shown at IO’s own showcase.

Ghost of Yotei:

The follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yotei is arguably one of the top most anticipated games in development, and is perhaps second only to Grand Theft Auto VI. At least, that’s how it sometimes seems.

Regardless, we’re mentioning this game because it made a brief appearance at today’s event. It had to be shown, of course, given its prominence. The appearance was short, though, because a more in-depth reveal is planned for next month. Today’s trailer advertises that game specific State of Play.

Marvel Tokou: Fighting Souls:

Fans of fighting games and Marvel comics/films/movies will be happy to hear that a new, PlayStation exclusive, Marvel fighting game is in development. It’s called Marvel Tokou: Fighting Souls, and it was the last thing shown during this livestream.

Arc System Works and PlayStation Studios are behind this project, which is devoid of Capcom’s assistance. They’re creating what is said to be a four-on-four tag fighting game, which features iconic heroes and villains like Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Doctor Doom, Storm, Ghost Rider and Ms. Marvel.
