Angry Birds: Star Wars is evolutionary, awesome

Angry Birds Star Wars takes off from Tatooine and lands on Earth this Thursday, November 8th, and it marks some of the most impressive gameplay changes we’ve seen to the Angry Birds franchise since the original game launched three years ago.

In the first gameplay video released, we see Luke and Leia birds, each with their own abilities, taking out enemies as they fly in. Don’t let us spoil it for you, take a look here:

Notice that Angry Birds Star Wars is not just a reskinning of the popular game. While it would be very easy to have added a few Luke and Leia birds and perhaps a Darth Vader final boss to the mix, it is very reassuring to see that Rovio has actually reworked the entire game to make the Star Wars in Angry Birds Star Wars actually stand out!

In addition to Luke and Leia, you’ll be able to play as C-3PO, R2-D2, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Chewbacca, and of course, the gunslinging Han Solo. Gameplay also includes some elements from Angry Birds Space for the, you guessed it, space-bound levels, as well as some more traditional gameplay for land-based bird-slinging action.

Slinging birds isn’t all that you do, though. Rather than the typical modifications of the yellow speed bird or blue split-personality bird, Luke whips out his lightsaber, R2-D2 electrocutes foes, and Han Solo uses his laser blaster to eliminate enemy birds. All in all, there looks to be some fantastic combat here in both the Angry Birds and Star Wars universes.

It’ll be interesting to see what Disney thinks of this game now that they’ve acquired LucasArts. We could actually see Disney purchasing Rovio outright and bringing Angry Birds into its product portfolio, introducing a new ride at Disney World, and getting the world bird-crazy (not that bird-crazy, though).
