Microsoft E3 2014 Indie Game Roundup

This morning’s Microsoft Press Conference was loaded with news from some of the heaviest hitters in the industry, including a multitude of indie games coming to Xbox One. Let’s take a sneak peek at some of these amazing games:

Cuphead

The first time I saw this 1930-cartoon inspired co-op run and gun  I fell in love. I can’t name a time when we got see such gorgeous hand-drawn visuals be incorporated into a game genre like this. It’s original, creative and extremely endearing.

Mighty No. 9

Megaman fans unite! Might No. 9 is the spiritual successor to the beloved franchise and works it with total gusto. This side-scrolling action game takes everything you ever loved about the 8 and 16-bit classics, lovingly creating something fresh yet so recognizable.

Below

Toronto’s Capybara Games is once again getting down to business with their latest indie project, Below. As atmospherically vast as another of their games, Sword & Sworcery, Below is groundbreaking in scale and proves just how powerful minimalism can truly be.

Inside

If you know Playdead Games, you know what a first impression they made with their groundbreaking puzzle platformer Limbo. Now they’re back with an oddly similar Inside, putting you in the shoes of a young boy facing the darkest side of human nature.

Lovers in a Dangerous Space Time

The first time I played Lovers in a Dangerous Space Time was back at Toronto’s Bit Bizaar, and I immediately fell in love. This frantic 1/2-player couch co-op action/defense game sent shivers down my spine with its intense gameplay and colourfully cute aesthetic. It’s no wonder it’s garnered such acclaim.

Hyper Light Drifter

What can I say about Hyper Light Drifter that hasn’t been said already? This 2D action RPG (in the same vain as, say, The Legend of Zelda) is a beautifully produced indie project by Heart Machine. It’s quietly confident and extremely bold in presentation. Can’t wait to see what else this talented developers has up their sleeves.

That’s only a few of the many games featured, but some of my personal favourites of the day. What indie games are you most excited for? Let us know in the comments below!
