Following another gag line about Jenko and Schmidt enlisting for medical school in 23 Jump Street, at the conclusion of this past June’s highly successful sequel, 22 Jump Street, Sony Pictures has decided to go ahead with the threequel for real! While it may not involve medical school, 23 Jump Street has been green-lit by the studio, with the two previous movies’ former directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller at least ‘overseeing’ in some capacity. It’s currently unknown whether they’ll return to direct the follow-up.
22 Jump Street writer, Rodney Rothman has been hired to once again draft this third movie in the surprisingly successful 21 Jump Street adaptation/sequel series. It’s not explicitly confirmed at this point, but it’s presumed that the series’ key leads, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill and Ice Cube will all return.
Despite its R-rating, 22 Jump Street was one of this Summer’s most enormous successes, and easily the most successful comedy of the Summer season. It even accomplished the monumental feat of out-grossing How To Train Your Dragon 2 in its opening weekend, a 3D family-friendly sequel in a highly beloved franchise that opened on the same day. Considering the huge profit it turned, an even bigger profit than its very well-received predecessor, a sequel was no doubt inevitable once again, especially considering that this Summer was a rather underwhelming Summer for the comedy genre.
We reviewed 22 Jump Street back in June, and we thought it wasn’t quite as good as the original, but still reasonably amusing.
We’ll be sure to keep an eye on the development of the next return to Jump Street. Thus, stay tuned to Eggplante for all news and updates on the 21 Jump Street series.
