Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel already set for 2019 release

After debuting the first teaser trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming last night, a trailer that was met with highly positive reception from viewers, Sony Pictures has already gone ahead and confirmed that a date has been reserved for a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, even with just over half a year or so to go before the original hits theatres! An untitled sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming has now been scheduled by Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios for July 5th, 2019, placing it almost exactly two years after its predecessor is due to premiere in 2017.smh-footage-1

This officially places the second Spider-Man movie set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the third Marvel Studios movie for 2019, after the MCU’s previously planned third 2019 movie, Inhumans, ended up being removed from the schedule, in favour of an Inhumans television series that will premiere next September. The untitled Spider-Man follow-up will be preceded by Captain Marvel on March 8th, 2019, and an untitled Avengers sequel on May 3rd, 2019. Casting and story details for the Spider-Man follow-up are obviously unknown at this point, though it’s pretty well certain that most of the Spider-Man: Homecoming lead cast will return, namely Tom Holland as the titular Web-Slinger, and Marisa Tomei as Aunt May.

The announcement of a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, complete with release date, has resulted in a small shuffle for Sony Pictures’ upcoming blockbuster calendar for that year, namely with Bad Boys 4, which is now moving to a May 24th, 2019 release date. The third Bad Boys movie, Bad Boys for Life, remains unaffected however, and is still scheduled for release on January 12th, 2018 at this point.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to hit theatres on July 7th, 2017, and will not only star Holland and Tomei, but also Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man. The movie’s lead villain will be portrayed by Michael Keaton, that being Adrian Toomes/The Vulture, with a secondary villain, Phineas Mason/The Tinkerer, to be portrayed by Michael Chernus. An international version of last night’s first teaser trailer also revealed that Bokeem Woodbine’s mystery villain will seemingly be Herman Schultz/Shocker.
