The nominees for the 85th Academy Awards have been announced!
While we won’t go through the whole list for brevity reasons, there are a few notable highlights on the list:
– Skyfall is up for five Oscars, four of which are in music, while the last in is in a slightly more prestigious category, Cinematography. One of the music nominations is for Adele’s theme song of the same name.
– Best Picture nominees include Argo, Lincoln, and Django Unchained, which squeezed just under the wire with its Christmas release date in the last week of 2012.
– Canada’s War Witch has a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category, the fifth for Canada in the category in the last 10 years.
In all, there are quite a few excellent films on the list, but it feels like there haven’t been any major blockbusters over the last year in the same way we had movies like The Lord of the Rings or Titanic or The Shawshank Redemption in years past.
It is extremely interesting to note that while The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been nominated for three Academy Awards this year, Best Picture and Best Actor categories is bare for Jackson’s films. Each of the movies in the first trilogy were nominated for Best Picture, with The Return of the King earning the honour as well as sweeping the awards with a record tying Ben-Hur and Titanic with 11 awards each, the most for a single film.
